KBC is recorded as the first club conducting successful birdwatching competition in Sumatra
Kerinci Birdwatching Club (KBC) conducted the first birdwatching competition in Sumatra. The competition was held on May 23rd, 2010 in Bukit Sentiong (Sentiong Hill) a landmark of the city of Sungai Penuh (was part of Kabupaten/ District Kerinci) covering an area about 0.1 km sq. There were almost 30 teams participated consisted of elementary and senior students, undergraduate students, nature lover, and local people from various background and professions. Each team consists of 3 people. The competition was conducted in cooperation with local government of Sungai Penuh, Ministry of Forestry ( Kerinci Seblat National Park authority), Burung Indonesia and involving local nature lover to celebrate Earth Day, Biodiversity Day and Climate Change Day as well as to introduce birdwatching activities to the community. Although it considered a new activity in Sungai Penuh, but surprisingly it successfully attracted a lot of participants and exceeded the target.
The City of Sungai Penuh is located in Jambi Province of Sumatra Indonesia. The city is surrounded by Kerinci Seblat Natonal Park . More than 50 % of its area administratively is inside the park thus the city is considered an important buffer zone for the park. Bukit Sentiong representing a secondary forest is located in the center of the city. It consists of more than 40 bird species recorded by KBC including Brahminy Kite, Black Eagle, Magpie Robin, White-Throated Kingfisher, Lesser Coucal, Sunda Pygmy Woodpecker, Common Lora, Yellow-Vented Bulbul, Long-Tailed Shrike, Olive-Backed Sunbird, White-Breasted Woodswallow, White-Breasted Waterhen, Yellow-bellied Prinia, White-headed Munia, Scaly-breasted Munia, White-headed Munia, Owl, Oriental White-eye, etc.
The local government is now considering Bukit Sentiong as a City Forest and it will definitely support a new home for wild birds and a favorite place for neighboring community to do birdwatching.
KBC is a non profit organization founded in 2002 focusing on conservation education through birdwatching activities. The club is under the affiliation with Kerinci Seblat National Park authority to raise local people awareness as well as to support birds’ data of the park.
The club indeed needs your support to conduct its mission on conservation education and birds survey, any help will be appreciated. Please take a look at KBC Album for photos.
